New GO station for Mississauga

MISSISSAUGA, ONT.

The Ontario government and GO Transit will build a new GO Train station in the rapidly growing Mississauga-Milton region northwest of Toronto.

“When the new Lisgar station opens in 2007, this will make the daily commute for Mississauga transit riders far more convenient,” Transportation Minister Harinder Takhar said in a statement. “Ridership on the Milton line has almost doubled over the past 10 years,” added Takhar.

Construction on the station is expected to begin this fall, on land recently purchased at a cost of roughly $3.5 million.

“This part of Mississauga is growing rapidly,” said GO Transit Chairman Dr. Gordon Chong.

“The province’s commitment to investing in GO Transit has allowed us to build new stations to serve GTA communities and help take cars off of our congested roads.”

Approximately 24,000 riders commute each weekday on GO Transit’s Milton line.

GO Transit carries 45 million riders annually, with ridership expected to double within the next 20 to 30 years.
