TransCanada plots power line to Vegas

BOZEMAN, Mont.

TransCanada Corp. of Calgary met recently with Montana’s governor to discuss the possibility of routing a planned 3,500-kilometre power line from Canada to Las Vegas through Montana.

The state is “interested in appropriate energy development in Montana” but is “concerned about development of transmission without inherent protection for Montana consumers,” Gov. Brian Schweitzer said.

The plan involves generating electricity at steam plants that are used to recover oil from Alberta tar sands, and perhaps also using the power line to carry energy originating in Montana, said Trans- Canada spokeswoman Hejdi Feick in Calgary.
