Lavalin wins $60M contract

MONTREAL

SNC-Lavalin Group has won $60 million in contracts to build two sulphuric acid plants for a Russian copper smelter, the engineering company said last week.

The contracts were awarded by Sredneuralsky Copper Smelter (SUMZ) a subsidiary of Ural Mining and Metallurgical Co., one of the largest copper producers in Russia.

The sulphuric acid plants will capture sulphur dioxide created during the copper smelting process.

The double absorption plants are capable of reducing atmospheric emissions of sulphur dioxide by as much as 99.7 per cent, the company said.

Work is set to start immediately with an expected completion date of March 2007.
