Labatt expands London operations

LONDON, Ont.

Labatt Breweries of Canada is spending $40 million to expand its London brewery, allowing the facility to churn out one billion bottles of beer annually.

Construction will begin in July and is scheduled for completion at the end of this year. Bottles won’t start flowing down the line until the beginning of 2006, Labatt said Tuesday.

The project will boost the 158-year-old brewery’s capacity by 45 per cent, Labatt said, with Ontario Labour Minister Chris Bentley on hand for the announcement.

Last month, Labatt announced a $50-million investment in its Montreal brewery. That money will help the brewery take over production from closures in Toronto and New Westminster, B.C.

The company announced in March that the Toronto plant will close in November. The brewery in the Vancouver suburb of New Westminster closed in April.

Labatt was bought by Belgian-based giant Interbrew a decade ago. Interbrew merged with Brazil’s AmBev last year, creating InBev, the world’s largest brewery.
