Highway 401 paving project underway
The Ontario government is repaving and upgrading Highway 401 from Kipling Avenue to Jane Street as part of a rehabilitation program, Transportation Minister Harinder Takhar announced this week.
Work includes repaving the eastbound collector lanes for five kilometres, repaving interchange ramps at 409/401, Islington Avenue and Weston Road, repairing twelve bridges, and installing new concrete barriers and four new overhead signs. This contract is part of the government’s multi-year $450-million Highway 401 Rehabilitation Program to eliminate bottlenecks and improve traffic flow and safety. The $25 million contract was awarded to Brennan Paving and Construction Limited of Markham. Construction is underway and is expected to be complete in fall 2007. To minimize the inconvenience to drivers, much of the work will be done in stages, with lane closures at night. The ministry will post signs in advance to warn drivers about upcoming lane closures.
The Ontario government is investing $1.2 billion in highway improvements this year. This record investment will improve safety, ease congestion and create more than 24,000 jobs.
