All you need to know about mould

A one-day workshop on design and construction techniques to avoid mould will be starting in the fall.

The course, Build and Renovate to Avoid Mould, was developed by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). It’s conducted through the CMHC’s Residential Indoor Air Quality Investigator Program.

The fall schedule of workshops across Canada will be available by late August or early September, said Suzanne Pilon, the program’s coordinator.

The course content is about 50 per cent of what had been taught in the Let’s Clear the Air workshop. It was a lecture-style course on mould, but she said participants asked for a more practical, hands-on approach.

It is targeted for builders, architects, designers, inspectors, mechanical contractors and building code officials, the new curriculum includes an introduction to mould and off-gassing and case studies for analysis.

Pilon is taking requests from companies, local CMHC offices and other interested participants for areas to run the workshops. A sweep of Northern Ontario was just completed, in which the course was held for the first time in areas such as Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie.

Each class needs a minimum of 15 people to run, and will go up to a maximum of 35.

The workshop costs $175 per person and is financed almost entirely through student fees, Pilon said.
