Ministry orders shields for hand grinders after fatal flying wheel pierces helmet
St. Catharines
The Ministry of Labour has ordered that all grinding wheels be fitted with protective shields at a St. Catharines metal-castings plant as part of its investigation into the accident that killed the son of Mayor Tim Rigby.
The ministry orders, handed down last week, also state that Johnson Matthey Ltd. must not modify its hand-held grinders unless it has received an engineer’s approval and the modification meets the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Tim Rigby Jr., 36, suffered fatal injuries on Monday while using a hand-held grinder at the plant.
A piece of equipment flew off the grinder and struck him in the face, causing a massive head injury.
According to a United Steel Workers Union memo, that piece of equipment was the grinding wheel, which hit Rigby with enough speed and force to pierce his protective goggles and helmet. He died later in a Hamilton hospital.
Johnson Matthey general manager Keith Neureuther declined to comment on the ministry orders.
