New research building for university

Worth $4.9M on the river

SAINT JOHN, N.B.

A new building for the Canadian Rivers Institute will allow researchers to more accurately pinpoint pollution problems in New Brunswick’s St. John River.

The new $4.9-million facility will be built on the University of New Brunswick’s Saint John campus as an expansion to K.C. Irving Hall.

Construction will begin in September and is hoped to be completed in the summer of 2006.

The two-storey building will house state-of-the-art labs as well as office space for researchers, technicians and graduate students.

Lack of research space and access to the latest technology has been curtailing the work of the fast-growing institute.

The Saint John campus researches the effects of industrial and agricultural activities on river systems.

When scientists discover a pollutant that’s having an impact on the river ecosystem, they try to identify exactly what in the pollution is causing the problem and where it’s coming from.
