Work begins shortly on port

PRINCE RUPERT

A final shipment was made Monday from the Fairview Terminal at the city’s port, clearing way for its demolition and the construction of a new container terminal.

The Saga Tide was scheduled to take the last shipment of wood pellets from the terminal, destined for Sweden, said the Prince Rupert Port Authority.

It said construction of the new container handling facility will begin shortly. Phase One of the project is scheduled to be completed in the first quarter of 2007, with Phase Two to be completed in 2010.

The $170-million container port project is expected to handle large container ships from Asia and relieve congestion at major West Coast ports.

Montreal-based CN Railway will spend $30 million for its part of the project. This will be added to $60 million in funding pledged by the Canadian and British Columbia governments. The remainder of the funding for the project comes from Maher Terminals of Canada Corp. and the Port of Prince Rupert.

CN has the only rail link to Prince Rupert, providing connections to major markets including Toronto, Montreal, Chicago and Memphis. The new terminal is intended to help alleviate congestion at Vancouver and U.S. Pacific ports.
