The number of Canadians collecting Employment Insurance benefits dropped for the second straight month in May, Statistics Canada reported this week.

Ontario showed a decline of 2.9 per cent, ahead of the national average of 2.1 per cent from April.

The number of regular beneficiaries has fallen six per cent in the last year and 9.8 per cent since May 2003.

Benefit payments totalled $712.4 million to 512,190 people in May.

May’s largest drop was in Alberta, followed by Manitoba, Ontario and British Columbia.

The Northwest Territories, Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick all reported increases.
