Sault Area Hospital
RFQ coming for hospital project
Construction expected to start next spring
The Sault Area Hospital is gearing up to issue a request for qualifications from private-sector consortia interested in building its new $200 million facility under the province’s so-called alternative financing and procurement (AFP) model.
The 289-bed hospital, which will consolidate local healthcare services in Sault Ste. Marie, has received the blessing of the province’s Ministry of Public Infrastructure Renewal as an AFP project. That means the construction work will be financed and carried out by the private sector, which will assume the financial risks if the project is not finished on time and on budget.
Once the hospital is built, it will be publicly owned and controlled. Construction is expected to begin in the spring, with a 2008 opening date. SAH project leader Harry Koskenoja said the hospital will be discussing implementation of the project under this new project delivery approach with the ministry prior to issuing a request for qualifications and ultimately, a request for proposals.
“We have to decide how our project would fit into the AFP model,” he said in an interview Friday.
Koskenoja said it is “too early to say” when requests for proposals will be issued.
The project will be of interest to consortia that include major contracting firms and financiers. The province’s Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care approved the functional program in April for the new hospital, which will be located near the F.J. Davey Home on Third Line.
Residents will have access to a full range of hospital services.
