Air base converted for passenger planes

ALBANY, N.Y.

The former Plattsburgh Air Force Base will be marketed as “Montreal’s U.S. airport’’ as part of a $20 million renovation project.

Construction has begun on a passenger terminal that is scheduled to open by 2007. The airport, which is one hour south of downtown Montreal, now serves industrial and cargo customers.

The airport, to be called Plattsburgh International Airport when opened for passenger operations by 2007, will be marketed as a travel option for Canadians as well as Americans near the border, according to a statement from Garry Douglas, president of the Plattsburgh North Country Chamber of Commerce.
