New dam approved for Manitou River

FORT FRANCES

The Ministry of Natural Resources is recommending a new dam be built to replace one in northern Ontario that is deteriorating.

The ministry has selected a “preferred alternative” following an environmental assessment of the Manitou River dam over the past year, says district planner Rachel Hill.

A recently released draft report recommends the existing dam be replaced with a new structure downstream.

The new dam would include a 21-metre overflow weir with a one-stop log bay.

Hill said the ministry has also prepared a draft environmental report regarding the impact of building such a dam.

The ministry is welcoming public comment until Sept. 5. Public feedback will be included in a final environmental report to be released this fall alongside a project plan. The public will then be given 30 days to again provide input to the ministry before the decision is finalized.

Hill couldn’t say when construction of the dam would begin since funding still needs to be obtained.
