Crash kills four near highway construction

BRISTOL, Ind.

A semitrailer rear-ended a car as it approached a construction zone on the Indiana Toll Road, triggering a chain-reaction crash that left four people dead and seven injured.

The accidents happened about 4:45 p.m. Sunday as the vehicles were approaching the work area near Bristol, 40 kilometres east of South Bend. In all, five cars and the semi were involved.

“It looks like the semi wasn’t able to slow down in time and caused the accident,” Indiana State Police trooper Jeff Dolson said.

The 56-year-old truck driver was charged with four counts of reckless homicide, police said. He was not injured and was taken to the Elkhart County Jail.
