Cannon shooting for gold with Victoria sport design
International experience cited for selection
International architects Cannon Design have been chosen for the $36 million Pacific Sport Institute at Victoria’s Camosun College Interurban Campus.
Cannon Design was among seven firms responding to a Request for Proposals issued earlier this summer and was selected, say college officials, based on their experience in conceptualizing and designing integrated sport training centres that support high performance athletes.
Cannon Design, with offices in Vancouver, Toronto, New York, Boston and numerous other cities, has more than 20 years experience on a wide range of sport-related venues and is acknowledged as a leader in the field, said Camosun president Liz Ashton.
Their project portfolio includes Cardel Place in Calgary, Canada’s first LEED gold recreation and wellness centre. The Pacific Sport Institute will be designed to a minimum LEED Gold environmental Standard.
Cannon Design was also the architect for the Talisman Centre for Sport and Wellness, Calgary, the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Kinesiology, the Collecutt Centre in Red Deer, Alta., and the University of Manitoba’s Pan American Games facility.
A joint project of Camosun Collect and PacificSport Victoria, the Pacific Sport Institute is scheduled to open in the spring of 2008.
The government of B.C. has pledged $18.5 million toward the project and federal support of $11 million is being sought. A capital campaign will be conducted to raise the remaining $7 million.
