Dessau-Soprin lands South American deal
MONTREAL
Dessau-Soprin, one of the country’s largest engineering and construction firms, recently secured a contract for supervising the construction of the SIEPAC (Sistema Interconectado para la America Central) interconnection project in Central America.
The project consists of the construction of a 230-kV power transmission line over a distance of more than 1,800 km from Guatemala to Panama, together with modifications to incoming and outgoing bays at 15 substations. The total value of the project is estimated at $330 million.
Dessau-Soprin will supervise all aspects of the project, including contractors’ design and engineering, quality assurance for equipment, application of environmental protection measures, and the installation and activation of the transmission line and its substations. The project will require over 200 employees.
A main project office will be opened in San Jose, Costa Rica, together with regional offices in the six countries crossed by the high-tension transmission line.
The SIEPAC project is aimed at limiting power shortages, reducing operating costs, optimizing the usage of clean hydroelectric power, promoting the development of a competitive electricity market.
