Major projects announced for N.B.

FREDERICTON

Several large-scale projects will receive federal funding as announced by Prime Minister Stephen Harper during his visit last week to New Brunswick.

If Moncton wins the bid to host the 2008 World Junior Track and Field Games, the federal government will commit $6 million towards construction of a 10,000-seat stadium. The feds will also pay up to $110 million for the Marysville highway bypass near Fredericton, and $88 million to clean up Saint John’s harbour.

These three projects were well-advanced when the former Liberal government was defeated in the Commons and the January 23 election called.

Ottawa’s contribution did not come from either the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency or any existing infrastructure fund, but from a special fund approved by cabinet.
