Stadium funding helps city win world games

MONCTON

The federal government’s commitment of $6 million to fund an outdoor stadium has helped Moncton become a unanimous pick to host the 2010 world junior track and field championships. But not until after it lost a close vote on the 2008 event to Bydgoszcz, Poland.

Bydgoszcz beat out Moncton by 15 votes to 11 in a second round of voting for the 2008 competition, after the two cities were tied in the first round.

The IAAF then handed the 2010 event to Moncton, in part because Prime Minister Stephen Harper committed federal funding to an outdoor stadium if Moncton won the right to host the championships.

The federal money is part of a $13-million infrastructure agreement to build facilities for the event at the University of Moncton.
