B.C. highway woes

VANCOUVER

The B.C. government says the proposed highway project in West Vancouver will be much safer and cheaper to build than the tunnel option opponents want.

It says the project has won environmental approvals and efforts will be made to reduce the impact on the forest wetlands. The government also says landscaping and screening work will be done to minimize the visual impact of the new road.

A group opposed to a plan to blast a four-lane route through Eagleridge Bluffs in the affluent city has set up a tent camp to try to block the work.

Opponents say the Sea to Sky highway project will damage a sensitive ecosystem and leave a scar on the mountain above Horseshoe Bay, one of the main terminals for ferries.
