Infrastructure money for Alberta

MEDICINE HAT, Alta.

Smaller communities will benefit from $176 million in infrastructure money coming from the Alberta and federal governments.

Federal Immigration Minister Monte Solberg said matching funds from municipalities will bring the fund’s total to $264 million.

Of that, 80 per cent will go to communities with populations under 250,000, while the rest will go to projects in Edmonton and Calgary.

Solberg said the initiative will help contribute to a better quality of life for Albertans by paying for better roads and water systems, among other things.

He said the money will also support cultural, recreational and tourism projects along with improved broadband Internet access.

Projects will be selected on a competitive basis from applications received from Alberta communities.

Alberta Municipal Affairs Minister Rob Renner said the deal is one that recognizes there are infrastructure needs at the municipal level that simply do not have adequate resources, and that all three levels of government have to work together.
