Students learn tender process isn’t just about the lowest bid

TORONTO

Teams from Toronto’s George Brown College and Ryerson University won big in the Canadian Institute of Quantity Surveyors’ (CIQS) 2006 Student Simulated Tender Competition.

The objective of the exercise was to encourage accuracy and help students develop their understanding of the tendering process.

An additional goal was to have students work as a team to appreciate the difficulties in organizing people and information to achieve a common goal.

“The learning principle emphasized was that it is more important to be thorough, accurate and right than to have the lowest bid price and chance of bankrupting the company,” the CIQS said.

The competition was planned, organized, managed and evaluated by the class of fourth-year students of the project management option of the architectural science program at Ryerson.

Students in their final year in construction, construction technology, building science, construction engineering and construction management within Canada were eligible to compete in the mock tender closing.

In all, a total of 156 students in 38 teams from five educational institutions in Ontario and Quebec participated. The awards will be presented to the winning teams at an upcoming meeting in May.

This year’s winners are:

• Closest to Target Price Award

Jam’n Construction from George Brown College.

• Presentation Award

1st place: Leading Edge from Ryerson

2nd CETM from George Brown College.

3rd M.E.J.A. from George Brown College.

• Overall Bid Package Award

1st JPNS Building Solution from George Brown.

2nd Just Management from Ryerson University.

3rd PMT Joint Venture from Ryerson University.

• Professionalism Award

Tuesday Team from Ryerson University.

Competition sponsors include the Ontario General Contractors Association, the Ontario Institute of Quantity surveyors in addition to CIQS.
