Industrial museum planned

MEDICINE HAT, Alta.

A southern Alberta city is one step closer to building a world-class industrial museum.

Medicine Hat’s Historic Clay District received $600,000 in funding from the federal government.

The district was once the site of Medicine Hat’s booming clay industry, where bricks, tiles and sewer pipes were manufactured from the clay found along the banks of the North Saskatchewan River.

Medicine Hat Mayor Garth Vallely says the Medalta Potteries Site, where visitors can both learn about the district’s history and take pottery classes, will be improved with the money.

Minister of Citizenship and Immigration and Medicine Hat MP Monte Solberg made the announcement during a news conference at the Medalta Potteries Site.

John Moldon, chairman of the Friends of Medalta Society, said the funding is important to the ongoing development of the district.

“We’ve done a lot of the building salvage and restoration,” he said.
