Impact study filed

MONTREAL

An environmental impact study conducted on an underground pipeline construction project to link Ultramar’s L Devis refining facilities to its Montreal East distribution centre was filed with the Quebec sustainable development, environment and parks ministry (MDDEP) and the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (CEAA).

This study was conducted by Groupe Conseil UDA Inc. in cooperation with firms specializing in the environment, archaeology, risk management and emergency measures. The project is known as Pipeline Saint-Laurent.

The pipeline is approximately 245 kilometres long and would serve as a complementary means of transport for Ultramar, reducing the need to use other modes of transportation, mostly unit trains and ships between L Devis and Montreal East. Construction of the pipeline is considered an important strategic element in increasing the security of supplies for Eastern Canada, while reducing dependency on refined product imports.

Ultramar initiated various actions that would eventually lead to the construction of the pipeline. The South Shore of the Saint-Lawrence River had been retained as the general zone under study.

The environmental impact study will be reviewed by the MDDEP and CEAA.
