New Aboriginal student centre to be built at U of M

WINNIPEG

Officials at the University of Manitoba hope a new $4-million Aboriginal student centre will help First Nation students feel more at home on campus and expose others to their culture and heritage.

Manitoba Metis Federation President David Chartrand presented the university with a cheque for $100,000 towards the construction of the centre.

The facility will replace the existing Aboriginal student centre currently housed in cramped office space.

Construction of the building is scheduled to begin in the fall.

The university hopes the new centre will help increase the number of First Nations, Metis and Inuit students in graduate and professional programs.
