Province wants old AC units replaced

TORONTO

The Ontario government wants building owners to replace big, old refrigeration and air conditioning units in a bid to save power.

Environment Minister Laurel Broten says the proposed regulation would require building owners to replace older industrial refrigeration and air conditioning units, or retrofit them to be more energy efficient.

She says phasing out inefficient cooling units will better manage the province’s energy use and improve the air.

Broten says the move could save the province as much as 50 megawatts of electricity — enough to power over 11,000 homes.

She says it will also protect the environment by phasing out the use of harmful CFCs, which are used in old units.

The government says new air conditioning technology is up to 50 per cent more energy-efficient and is less expensive for building owners to maintain and operate.
