Building more parking won’t meet demand

CALGARY

The average price Calgarians pay to park for a month is the highest in the country — about $375 per month.

The premium parking fees are the result of a number of factors, including a high density of office space in the downtown core, said Mayor Dave Bronconnier.

While the city is taking several steps to alleviate some of the pressures, including expanding parkades and surface lots, the supply of parking will likely never keep up with demand.

The mayor said Calgary has as much downtown office space as Edmonton, Regina and Vancouver combined — and a lot more is currently under construction.

Tipping the scales as the world’s most expensive place to park is London, where drivers are asked to pay more than $1,000 per month.
