$3B refinery to be built in U.S. by BP

CALGARY

BP PLC’s U.S. unit says it will invest US$3 billion in a northwestern Indiana refinery to handle Canadian heavy crude oil processing, increasing its production of motor fuels by about 15 per cent.

The move involves reconfiguring the refinery. It’s expected to create up to 80 new permanent full-time jobs and 2,500 jobs during the three-year construction phase.

The Whiting refinery produces about 4.5 billion gallons of transportation fuel each year.

Company officials announced in October they were considering upgrading either the Whiting or Texas City refinery to turn Canadian oil sands into gasoline.

Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in 2007 and be completed by 2011, pending regulatory approvals.
