Alberta firm wins $67M contract
EDMONTON
Bird Construction Company has been awarded a $67 million contract to provide support buildings to a company in the Fort McMurray oil sands area.
While Bird is not disclosing the client’s name, the award follows on the heels of the recent $135 million contract to build a water treatment project in the area for the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.
The water reclamation project is the largest contract to date won by Bird in the area, says Bird construction manager Don Cameron.
“We are four or five months into the project which is expected to last two years.”
The contract value of $135.1 million was based upon a low tender of $142.9 million, minus cost savings of $7.8 million. As a condition of the award on the treatment plant, Bird has agreed to develop and implement cost-savings measures.
“This award delivers to Fort McMurray a treatment facility, featuring new technologies, which meets all Alberta Environment standards and has future expansion capacity to serve a population of 133,000,” said Wes Holodniuk, regional manager of operations and maintenance.
Cameron says the construction of the support buildings and the treatment plant are both being handled out of the Edmonton office. They are expected to finish in 2008.
Recent Bird builds in the area have included the UE-1Project, which was a $92 million contract for Syncrude to provide the foundation and infrastructure for its plant expansion (now complete) and a $19.8 million contract to build Albian Sands Energy Inc.’s truck shop complex.
Bird has also received a $25 million award for the expansion of the sewage treatment plant for the City of Winnipeg, Manitoba. The project is expected to complete in mid-2008.
