College program gets Gold Seal of approval
In a national first, the Canadian Construction Association’s (CCA) Gold Seal program has provided accreditation to the construction engineering technology (CET) program at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT).
Although Gold Seal has accredited more than 300 individual courses across Canada as fitting its “national curriculum” of construction management topics, NAIT is the first Canadian institution to receive program accreditation.
“This (CET) program has been a leader for us,” said NAIT president Sam Shaw. “It contributes directly to our vision of being an outstanding technical institute committed to student success in the global economy.
“This recognition from the Canadian Construction Association is another signal that we are meeting industry’s needs.”
The two-year program covers courses such as construction economics, contract law, communications, estimating, project planning and supervision.
Program head Terry Fulcher pointed out that the program is aimed directly at construction management.
“With a million workers in an industry that contributes over $165 billion to Canada’s GDP, management skills are critical,” Fulcher said, noting the increasingly global nature of the industry, with Canadian firms competing and winning on the international stage.
Andrew Shepherd, CCA’s Gold Seal manager, said NAIT has a national reputation for its construction management program as well as for teaching excellence.
“They are a critical partner in our mission of improving construction management skills.”
NAIT is one of the largest institutes of technology in Canada, providing education in business, advanced technologies and skilled trades to more than 67,500 students annually at eight campuses in Alberta.
