NB building power line to the U.S.

LEPREAU, N.B.

Construction has begun on a power transmission line that will improve New Brunswick’s ability to export electricity to the United States.

The new 345-megawatt line is in addition to an existing 700-megawatt line that’s about 30 years old.

“You know we’re going to be looking at a feasibility study on perhaps a new generation station and, by far and away, we would be exporting most of what we generated,” said Jack Keir, New Brunswick’s energy minister. “It’s important that we have the transmission lines to send that power down to the northeastern United States.”

NB Power is planning a $1.5 billion refurbishment of the Point Lepreau nuclear power plant. The New Brunswick portion of the new line covers 95 kilometres and will cost about $60 million.
