New lab needed for Saskatoon

SASKATOON

The St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation has given the Saskatoon Health Region $117,000 to create a modern lab at the hospital.

Health region spokeswoman Judy Archer says blueprints for the new lab are ready, but construction has yet to begin.

Doctors have expressed concern that Saskatoon was going to fall far short of meeting new stricter requirements set by Health Canada regulating all tissue, cell and organ transplants in the country.

The health region also deemed existing facilities in the city as having “several deficiencies.”

The current lab does not use DNA testing to match a donor and recipient’s tissue. Any samples the current lab has trouble analyzing now must be sent away, usually to Winnipeg or Calgary, for additional testing.
