Province okays Lafarge plan to test burn fuels

TORONTO

The province says Lafarge Canada can test burning alternative fuels, including tires and bone meal, at its cement plant in Bath, Ont.

The approval allows Lafarge to import and burn up to 100 tonnes of municipal waste per day, including tires, meat and bone meal, and pelletized garbage. It also allows Lafarge to create a waste disposal site capable of storing up to 1,000 tonnes of municipal waste at a time.

The certificate of approval outlines how the use of alternative fuels will be phased in at the plant near Kingston. It sets out monitoring requirements to detect toxins that might be released into the environment.

The environmental group Lake Ontario Waterkeeper said in a release that it has concerns about air and water emissions from the plant.

The approval sets out 27 conditions Lafarge must meet to use alternative fuels in the Bath plant. It also outlines a procedure for prompt investigation of complaints from the public.
