Fossil centre to be built in N.S.
JOGGINS, N.S.
A centre dedicated to one of the world’s best fossil sites, located in northern Nova Scotia, will soon be under construction with almost $7 million in new money for the project.
The cash, $4.8 million from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and up to $1.8 million from the provincial Tourism Department, is for an interpretive centre at the Joggins fossil cliffs.
The centre is part of the community’s pitch to have the area designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Rhonda Kelly, executive director of the Cumberland Regional Economic Development Association, said the commitments mean building can actually begin, with land-clearing possibly starting by the end of the month.
“They’ve got a really tight time schedule, so we’ll probably see some activity very soon there,” Kelly said.
The centre is to be open by late summer.
The plan calls for exhibition space, a gift shop, cafe, multi-purpose room and a lab for an in-house paleontologist and visiting scientists.
Kelly expects about 35,000 people a year to visit the centre.
The centre will be built on about 11 hectares of land the province is transferring to the county.
