AECL not guaranteed nuclear contract

TORONTO

An official for Ontario’s Energy Minister says the province hasn’t made up its mind about who will build Ontario’s newest nuclear plant.

Steve Irwin says rather than give the contract to the Crown-owned Atomic Energy of Canada, there will be an open competition with global vendors.

He says there is a preference to use Canadian technology, but the government also has to think about what’s best for taxpayers.

Irwin’s comments come in response to federal Natural Resource Minister Gary Lunn’s assertion that it’s imperative for Atomic Energy to get the multi-billion-dollar contract.

Ontario plans to spend up to $40-billion building two new nuclear reactors and refurbishing up to half a dozen others over the next two decades.
