Eastern Premiers westward ho

EDMONTON

The four Atlantic premiers are going to Alberta to do what many people from their provinces have already done — scout out the red-hot job market.

They’re heading to Edmonton on Jan. 25 with about 35 Atlantic companies on what’s being billed as an Alberta trade mission.

“The objective would be to explore opportunities to expand both economies, what we can do for Alberta and what Alberta can do for us,” said Glenn Davis, a spokesman for the Council of Atlantic Premiers.

The premiers — Prince Edward Island’s Pat Binns, New Brunswick’s Shawn Graham, Nova Scotia’s Rodney MacDonald and Newfoundland and Labrador’s Danny Williams — are visiting Edmonton and Fort McMurray to promote trade and investment opportunities.

They’ll meet with business leaders from both regions, as well as stopping by the office of Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach.

Davis said most of the delegation represents companies in the construction and specialized metal business.

He said the idea was hatched in December.

“We hear the whole economy in Alberta is so on fire that it’s hard for companies to get what they need because of the labour market,” he said.
