Canadian know-how heads to India Toronto engineering firm to design water system

A consortium that includes Toronto-headquartered R.V. Anderson Associates Ltd. (RVA) has landed a plum $21 million (Cdn) assignment to design priority improvements to the city of Mumbai’s wastewater treatment system.

Alan Perks, RVA’s Ottawa-based managing director, international, told Daily Commercial News that upwards of 15 Canadian and 33 Indian engineers will be working on the contract, for Phase II of the Mumbai sewage disposal project.

Design work is expected to take 12 to 15 months to complete on the $350 million project, one of the largest of its ilk in India.

The contract was awarded to the consortium by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM). The corporation issued a request for proposals last April. A total of seven organizations competed for the assignment.

RVA’s consortium partners are Mott MacDonald Ltd. of the UK and India, and PHE Consultants of Mumbai.

The project includes construction of a new wastewater treatment plant, upgrades at three plants and four lagoon treatment facilities, construction of two new pumping stations and upgrading of another 15 stations, construction of a new sea outfall tunnel and a variety of sewer system improvements.

Construction is expected to get under way late this year or early 2008, Perks said.

The wastewater system serves a population of more than 12 million people.

Over the last 12 years, RVA has completed several urban infrastructure assignments in India, including operation & maintenance upgrading for Mumbai’s wastewater infrastructure and the development of a 25-year master plan for Mumbai’s wastewater systems.

That master plan, also undertaken in collaboration with Mott MacDonald and PHE Consultants, provided the foundation for the current improvement project.

RVA is also working with Tokyo Engineering Consultants to improve wastewater treatment capacity along the Yamuna River between Delhi and Agra under the Yamuna action plan II project, financed by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation.

In addition, the firm has commissioned and operated a large industrial wastewater treatment plant for the Vapi Industries Association in Gujarat.

It has undertaken other technical assistance projects supported by the Canadian International Development Agency in Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Punjab.

RVA currently is completing a feasibility study of environmental improvements in the municipality of Sangli Miraj Kupwad in southern Maharashtra.

In 2002, the Canada-India Business Council recognized RVA for its success in India with the first annual Canada-India Business Partnership Award, presented to Canadian firms that have been developing new business opportunities in India.
