Green building project highlights
City of Guelph civic administration building
Goal: LEED silver certification
Budget: $50,749,734
Green features: A green roof over 50 per cent of the building, use of a local supplier for the green roof plant materials, use of a living wall made with plant material and water trickling over to improve air quality and humidity within the building (the wall was pioneered by the University of Guelph), use of natural light in interior spaces and locating enclosed offices and meeting rooms towards the centre of the building and using an open concept for work areas closer to the windows.
Target completion date: May, 2008.
City of Cambridge civic administration building
Goal: LEED gold certification
Budget: $29.9 million
Green features: Collecting rain water to use in washrooms, green roof, green wall in the atrium, use of car pooling, environmentally friendly materials, stringent recycling program in effect during construction, reusing materials from a building that was previously on the site; providing windows that open on all four stories, energy system efficiencies aimed to achieve 35 per cent less energy consumption than a conventional building.
Target completion date: December, 2007
County of Oxford administration building
Goal: LEED silver certification
Green features: Built on a brownfill site in downtown Woodstock; energy efficiency features to achieve 25 to 40 per cent range of savings compared to a conventionally constructed building; underground parking, use of rainwater for washrooms.
Target completion date: March, 2008
