University of South Carolina’s biomass plant first of its kind

COLUMBIA, S.C.

The University of South Carolina is ready to fire up its new US$19-million high-tech biomass energy plant.

The plant will use tree waste from nearby International Paper to generate energy for seven miles of steam pipes on the campus plus enough electricity to power up to 1,000 average homes.

The USC plant will annually consume an estimated 57,000 tons of tree waste; South Carolina generates between 10 million tons and 20 million tons of tree waste each year. USC could realize US$2 million a year in energy savings.

The biomass generator will be the first of its kind in operation in the United States.
