Canadian government earmarks $3.3 million for watermain projects in Lasalle and Woolwich Township

TORONTO

The federal government has earmarked $3.3 million to replace crumbling rural watermains in two southwestern Ontario communities: the Town of Lasalle and Woolwich Township.

The funding represents one-third of the cost of the projects and is from a $200-million federal fund announced in February 2007.

Gary Baxter, the mayor of Lasalle, says parts of the water system in his city south of Windsor date back to the early 1900s and are prone to breaking.

LaSalle is in line for almost $2.7 million in federal funds, which is conditional on an environmental review and other requirements.

Woolich Township, which includes the community of Elmira, north of Kitchener, is in line for $600,000 for its watermain upgrades.
