Railway suspends operations in Assam over fears of rebel attacks on construction workers

ASSAM, India

Sixteen railway construction companies in the North Cachar Hills of Assam recently decided to stop working following a string of rebel strikes in which 12 workers were killed.

Northeast Frontier Railway suspended all night trains while an estimated 3,000 workers from 16 construction firms stopped working for fear of fresh attacks. The withdrawal of operations by the construction companies was likely to hit the megaproject of broad-gauge conversion linking parts of southern Assam through the North Cachar Hills.
