Canam scores steel contract for Penguins’ arena

BOUCHERVILLE, Que.

Construction and engineering firm Canam Group Inc.’s Structal-Heavy Steel Construction division has won a $35-million contract for work on a new arena for the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins.

The new arena that will house the hockey team is expected to cost a total of about US$290 million to build and will replace the team’s current rink, Mellon Arena.

It will be owned by the Sports and Exhibition Authority and Allegheny County and managed by the hockey club.

“This contract, which brings to 48 the number of North American stadiums, arenas and other sports facilities Structal has been associated with over the years, highlights our expertise in the construction of complex projects,” Structal president Luc Pelland said in a statement.

Canam business unit Technyx will produce shop drawings for the project.

Fabrication of structural steel components for the arena is expected to begin this fall at Canam plants in St. Gedeon de Beauce, Que., and Point of Rocks, Md. Steel structure construction at the site is scheduled to begin in December and be completed in the third quarter of next year.
