Nova Scotia doubles fines for drivers who speed in work zones

Nova Scotia is doubling fines for motorists convicted of speeding in a work zone.

Beginning last week, fines, including court costs, now range from $337 for a first offence to $2,407 for a third offence.

Offenders will also collect demerit points.

Meanwhile, the province has contributed $50,000 and the Nova Scotia Road Builders’ Association $10,000, to the work zone safety campaign to persuade motorists to slow down around highway construction.

Premier Rodney MacDonald announced the campaign at a construction site on Highway 104 east of New Glasgow, N.S.

It’s one of several provincial initiatives to improve road safety including the banning of hand-held cellphones, legislation against street racing and new graduated licensing rules.
