George Brown College wins an additional $61.5 million in provincial funds for Toronto waterfront campus
George Brown College will receive $61.5 million in provincial funding to build a new campus on Toronto’s waterfront.
The development will be located on a 0.83 hectare (two-acre) parcel of land located on the south side of Queens Quay Boulevard between Lower Jarvis and Lower Sherbourne Streets, just south of East Bayfront in the West Donlands.
“The presence of an academic institution has been a long standing Waterfront Toronto goal both as part of our employment strategy and as part of our vision for an animated, creative waterfront,” said Mark Wilson, chair of the Waterfront Toronto Board of Directors.
Conceptual design has been completed by Montreal-based architect Daoust Lestage Inc. Two multi-storey buildings with retail space and underground parking have been proposed.
The campus features (1) space for the college’s Centre for Health Sciences; (2) the first George Brown student residence, with space for 500 students; and (3) a recreation and athletics centre.
The college will issue a Request For Proposals later this year for architects to complete the working drawings phase. Tender schedules have not been set, but construction is expected to start in 2009 and be completed by fall 2011.
