Green roof over Yonkers reservoir could be world’s largest

YONKERS, N.Y.

An environmentally friendly “green roof” would be the world’s largest if built over a Yonkers reservoir.

Environmental officials are planning the US$1.6 billion project to cover the 37 hectare Hillview Reservoir, which supplies New York City with water.

They say the covers, which would pile 25 centimetres of dirt and grass on top of a concrete cap, help protect the concrete from sun damage and soak up rainwater before it clogs sewers.

Construction is expected to start in 2011 and finish five years later.
