Texas worker dies as crane working over Colorado River topples
SMITHVILLE, Texas
Officials in Texas say a crane removing steel girders from an aging bridge over the Colorado River became overloaded and toppled, killing one worker and injuring another.
A Department of Transportation spokesman says the crane smashed into a piece of equipment and knocked two men from a manlift basket, sending one falling, on July 30.
It is unclear whether the man fell into the river or landed on the riverbed. The bridge is about 23 metres above the river.
Spokesman Marcus Cooper says the crane was part of routine work to replace the Loop 230 bridge in Bastrop County.
