Retailers demand halt to City of Toronto’s Bloor and Yonge revitalization work

TORONTO

A lawyer representing a group of retailers says the city of Toronto “cheated” when it went ahead with a major downtown construction project to spruce up the area without first conducting an environmental assessment.

Clayton Ruby and a handful of Bloor and Yonge shop owners are demanding the city study how the sidewalk-widening and beautification project will affect the surrounding area.

Until then, they want the $25-million project delayed.

Ruby has filed a notice of application for judicial review in divisional court.

Lawyer Darrel Smith says the city of Toronto will fight the application.

The retailers say the construction is affecting business and fear it may impact the Christmas shopping season.
