U.S. trade deficit remains stuck at $700 billion

Over the last 19 months, the U.S. trade deficit has proved to be intractable. While a surplus in services keeps it from sinking completely, the deficit in goods, such as energy products, petroleum computer equipment, footwear and clothing, keeps creeping higher.

CanaData chief economist Alex Carrick explains the importance of these trade figures to the construction industry and the three product areas — energy, manufacturing and consumer products manufactured overseas — that contribute to the deficit.
