Quebec nuke plant to get $1.9 billion upgrade

TORONTO

Electric utility Hydro-Quebec said it plans to spend $1.9 billion to refurbish its 675-megawatt Gentilly-2 nuclear generating unit to extend the unit’s life span to about 2040. Hydro-Quebec, owned by the province of Quebec, said that engineering and procurement work will start this year. Construction work will begin in 2011, and the utility expects the unit to return to service in 2012.
