OGCA Annual Construction Symposium

Advent of BIM will change project-delivery methods, says Ottawa contractor

BLUE MOUNTAIN

The advent of building information modeling will have a major impact on project-delivery methods, says Ottawa contractor Doug Burnside, president of Dolyn Developments Inc.

“I think we are going to see more design-build projects as opposed to traditional design-bid-build,” he told a seminar at the Ontario General Contractors Association’s 6th annual construction symposium.

“I don’t see it happening tomorrow, but it’s certainly in the pipeline.”

Dolyn, whose firm is involved in general contracting, construction management and design-build projects, believes LEED and green building are here to stay, as are P3 projects.

“I think we can expect to see more P3 projects,” said Burnside, who opened Dolyn in 1989 and has since been involved in more than $200 million of construction. “I also think the thresholds will be lowered in smaller municipalities.”

Burnside, a former president of the General Contractors Association of Ottawa, was part of a panel that included Matt Ainley, executive vice-president of Vanbots, a division of Carillion Construction, Frank DeCaria, president and CEO of Eastern Construction and Tom Kemp, president of James Kemp Construction Ltd.
