Canada unveils model Afghan village

DEH-E BAGH, Afghanistan

Canada recently took the wraps off its “model village” project in southern Afghanistan.

To mark the occasion, Canadian government and military representatives met local and provincial Afghan officials in the village of Deh-e Bagh just south of Kandahar city.

The district’s leader praised the help Canadians have offered in terms of security and development.

Brig.-Gen. Jonathan Vance called it an “important” day.

The project is important to Canada’s strategy of moving away from a hard-edged military role toward one of aid and construction. The idea is to create communities in which Afghans themselves feel safe enough to pursue their own economic and social development agenda.
